Laura Nell Cook
Laura Nell Cook passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2020, in her home surrounded by loved ones.
A memorial service for Laura will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 20, at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
She was born on May 4, 1929, in Reams, to Jim and Hollie Cook. When Laura was 12 years old, the family moved to California. While in High School in Lodi, she worked as a secretary for the high school.
After graduating from high school, Laura worked as a secretary at Tillie Lewis Canned Foods, Inc. She continued her secretarial career and began working for a privately-owned weapons manufacturer similar to M.C.A.A.P.
Because of her love of traveling, she decided to apply to the United States Department of State as an embassy employee. Her dream of traveling became a reality when she received her first assignment as a U.S. Embassy secretary to Malawi, Africa.
After the standard two years of service, her other assignments included Moscow, London, Cairo, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and finally Ammon, Jordan, where she became the secretary to U.S. Ambassador Harrison.
Upon retirement in 1998, she moved to McAlester, to be near family. She was a member of the local Fortnightly Club, Daughters of American Revolution and McAlester First Baptist Church, where she loved singing in the choir. She made many friends while being a part of these groups.
She was a huge supporter of family and enjoyed going to concerts for her great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She also loved sharing with family and friends about her travels and experiences.
In her later years, she moved in with her great-niece, Donna Skinner. The family made a special room just for her and she was taken care of day and night until her passing. She will be greatly missed by us all. Although we are saddened by the loss of "Aunt Laura", we rejoice knowing she is no longer in pain.

I considered it a blessing to take aunt Laura in, and take care of her the past 4 1/2 years of her life. I already miss her terribly, but we will have a great reunion one day, Miss you terribly, Love you forever ❤️
