Charles Donald Swaffard (Pete) Obituary

Charles "Pete" Swaffard, 80, of Hartshorne, Oklahoma passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at his home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 318 E. Choctaw, McAlester, Oklahoma 74501.

Viewing will be held on Friday, October 23, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Jones Harkins Funeral Home in Wilburton, OK.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Noon at Damon Cemetery, Damon Valley Community, Oklahoma with Rev. Jay Caudill officiating. the Choctaw Color Guard will provide military honors. The burial will follow under the direction of Jones Harkins Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be David Dunham, Colby Workman, Cody Browne, Larry Don Fite, Jordan Taylor, and Chance Swaffard.

Honorary pallbearers will be BB Sabala, Skip Sensibaugh, Jim Kuriko, Teddy Sitters, Joe Bill Aaron, George Dunagan, Loyde Matthews, Floyde Davis, Donnie Fite and Sonny Nicter.

Pete was born on May 10, 1940 in Ada, Oklahoma to Charlie Swaffard and Lillian (Ramsey) Swaffard. He married Yvonne Anderson on March 26, 1967. He joined the U.S. Army in 1964 and received an honorable discharge in 1966. He served 1 year in Vietnam. Pete was of the Baptist faith.

Pete received a bachelor's degree in counseling from Southeastern University in Durant. He worked 13 years for Jones Academy. In 1980, he began working for the Arkla Gas Company as a mechanic and retired in 1996. Since his retirement, he spent a large amount of his time working in the community. He was Commander of the Wilburton VFW Post #3649 for many years, member of the board of directors at the Latimer County General Hospital, and was Choctaw SR. Elder, and kept busy as a care-taker of Damon Cemetery.

He is survived by his son: Chad Swaffard and wife, Cindy of Damon Valley; his grandchildren: Jordan Taylor, Chance Swaffard, Charity Workman and husband, Colby, Logan Grady, and Kylee Taylor; his dear friend: JoAnn Holliday of Hartshorne; a son-in-law: Joe Taylor of Durant; sister-in-law: Lavonne Halford and husband, Rod of Higgins; a brother-in-law: Billy Sparks and wife, Lisa of Wilburton; and numerous nephews and other family and friends.

Pete was preceded in death by his wife: Yvonne (Anderson) Swaffard in 2005; his daughter: Judy (Swaffard) Taylor in 2007; and two brothers: Larry Sullivan and Sammy Sullivan.
