Audrey Jane Skimbo Obituary

Audrey Jane (Lawrence) Skimbo, aged 92 years, died May 1, 2021 following a stroke. She was the daughter of James Lee Lawrence and Jennie Lee (Reed) Lawrence. She was born in the family home on Cravens Road, the fifth of ten children.

Audrey married Johnnie Skimbo in 1945 and was the mother of eight (8) children: Johnny Lee Skimbo, Joe Pete Skimbo, Mary Jane (Skimbo) Laing, James Robert Skimbo, Lawrence Ray Skimbo, Jennie Ann Skimbo, William Penn Skimbo, and Janice K. Skimbo. Audrey was survived by all of her children except Johnny Lee Skimbo. Audreys husband, Johnnie Skimbo, died in 1989 and she never remarried.

Audrey is survived by her daughters-in-law, Susan (Taylor) Skimbo and Valerie (Welch) Skimbo and her son-in-law, David Laing. She is survived by her sister, Jo Ann (Lawrence) Back, and her sisters husband, Frank Back. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Judy (Bullard) Lawrence. Audrey was survived by many grandsons, granddaughters, great grandsons, great granddaughters, a great great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews (with many calling her Aunt Aud).

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie; her son, Johnny Lee; her parents, Jim Lawrence and Jennie Lawrence; her siblings: Thomas Sherman Lawrence; Robert (Bob) Lawrence and wife, Mildred (Walker) Lawrence; Alice Glen Lawrence; Allene (Lawrence) Gillespie and husband, C. C.; an infant sister; Thelma Louise (Lawrence) Allen; Frank Lawrence; Harold Wayne Lawrence and wife, Peggy.

In 1945 Audrey graduated as the class valedictorian of Panola High School at age 16 years. If any disagreement arose she was always found to be right; after all she was the valedictorian. She was also active in sports at Panola High School. She worked as a secretary to the Latimer County Commissioners for many years; but under the condition that she could bring her kids to work. Which she did. She then began working for the State of Oklahoma Department of Human Services until she retired in the 1990s. Audrey loved basketball and many sports. She had the NBA sports package so that she would never have to miss an OKC Thunder game and even attended a game in person. She enjoyed reading the Latimer County News Tribune and guessing who was on the page from the past. She knew most of them. She loved game shows and Pawn Stars. Her physical condition and the covid virus had limited her ability to get around; but she made up for it by using her telephone. Audrey was a real patriot with her husband, sons, grandson, granddaughter, and other family members serving in the U. S. Military. She had many valued friends. Most of all, Audrey loved people and family. She honestly cared what they thought and if she could help them in any way.

Audrey was a member of the United Methodist Church of Wilburton, Oklahoma and a member of the Aichihoyo chapter of Eastern Star.
