Virgil's Story

Text size

Virgil Albert Ellis passed away in McAlester, Oklahoma on Monday, May 22, 2017, at the age of 77 years. Virgil was the son of Homer and Zelma (Bacon) Ellis, born on January 3, 1940, in Stuart, Oklahoma. He was brought up and attended schools in Stuart, and was Senior class president when he graduated Stuart High School in 1958. He attended Oklahoma State University at Stillwater, and earned a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Shirley Jean Turpin on May 31, 1963, in Howe, Texas. They made their home and brought up their son and daughter in the Plano area, where Virgil worked forty years for Texas Instruments. When he retired in 2002, he and Shirley returned to Oklahoma, where they built a new home on the old family homeplace at Stuart, and thoroughly enjoyed coming back to their roots. They made the most of their time, and were blessed with fifty-four beautiful years together. Virgil attended the Stuart Church of Christ. He enjoyed golfing and studying his family ancestry. He loved travel, particularly traveling the U.S. with family, mostly Shirley's brothers and sisters. Virgil would furnish the car, Jerry would serve as Chauffeur, and off they'd go to tour the Country. They also loved taking cruises and especially enjoyed the ones that were a couple of weeks long, including trips to Spain, Ireland, Alaska, and the Panama Canal. Virgil loved life, loved his immediate and extended family, and his many friends. He was much loved in return, and will be deeply missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Zelma Ellis; two sisters, Zula Singleton and Pearl Giles. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of the home; two children, John Ellis (Debbie) of Pottsboro Texas, and Mary Gerths (Scott) of Frisco Texas; four grandchildren: Lexi Ellis of Dallas, Amanda Gerths of Tulsa, Daniel Gerths of Stillwater, and Shane Gerths of Denton Texas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jerry and Pauline Johnson of Lindale Texas, Gene and Joyce Turpin of Atwood, Paul and Doretta Turpin of Calvin, Ralph and Jimmie Nell Turpin of Gerty, Roger and Margaret Levingston of Allen; numerous nieces and nephews, other family members, and many friends. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 25, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at the Stuart Church of Christ, interment at Hilltop Cemetery, with Chris Rampey officiating. Pallbearers were Daniel Gerths, Shane Gerths, Gary Raney, Paul Johnson, James Johnson, Phillip Haning, Greg Turpin, and Joseph Hlavenka. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Sturgeon and Denton McNutt.
