Phillip "Flop"'s Story
Phillip "Flop" Magdalena, 91, of McAlester, died Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in Oklahoma City.
Family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Brumley-Mills Chapel in McAlester with Rodney Briggs officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Phil was born on April 1, 1926, in Hartshorne, to Adolphus and Anna Magdalena. He later moved to Krebs then McAlester. He graduated from McAlester High School in 1944.
He married Wanda Elaine Emery in Sherman, Texas in 1947. Phil was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 27 years as a manager. He won many awards and trips, giving Phil and Wanda opportunities to dance under the stars.
He enjoyed playing softball and golf and was in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
When he became unable to play golf he and his retired friends began meeting at McDonalds and Walmart, solving "World Problems." He was elected as "Chairman of the Bored" and presented a gavel, made by Bill Perona. Phil would "call to order all the Members of the Bored" and many Walmart shoppers would pull up a chair and join in the conversation!! Nothing compares to friendships!!
Phil was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Intercessory Prayer Room, General Officer of Sunday School/Money Counter with senior friends.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Shirley Magdalena, of Midwest City; daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and James Coffey, of Oklahoma City, and numerous nieces and nephews, Sammy and Terri Magdalena, of McAlester, Sherri and McKayla Magdalena, of McAlester, Charles and Darlene Melancon, of New Orleans, Louisiana, Barry and Elaine Barnes, of Riverside, Missouri, Ruth Doss, of Navarre, Florida, David and Lynette Spradling, of Marietta, Pam Emery, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Travis and Elizabeth Branscum and children, Heaven, Kailey and Addison, of Marietta, Bryan and Crystal Porter and children, Chris, Zayne and Trace, of Marietta, Chance, Ashley and Gentry Thompson, of Marietta, Butch and Connie Park, of Biloxi, Mississippi, and Rebecca Crowell, of Biloxi.
Active pallbearers will be Sammy Magdalena, Chris Martin, Charley Akin, Ron Testa, Jerry Coffey and Jimmy Coffey.
Honorary pallbearers will be all golfers, past and present from Thunder Creek Golf Course.
