Mary L. McGee, 63, of McAlester, died Sunday, September 24, 2017, in Tulsa. The family will receive friends at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 28, at 10 a.m. at the First Free Will Baptist Church in McAlester with Rev. Jamie Kirkpatrick officiating, assisted by Rev. Steve Mayhew. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester. Pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church.
Mary L. McGee was born on July 22, 1954, in McAlester to William Clayborn and Edna Mae (Thompson) Cathey. She grew up here and graduated from McAlester High School in 1972, then attended Southeastern State University in Durant, where she earned a Bachelor's degree. She returned to McAlester and began an exceptional 34 year career as an elementary school teacher.
Mary was a long time, devoted member of the Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano, and was a Sunday School teacher and youth leader for many years. In her spare time her favorite activity was spending time with her kids and especially her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her husband, Daniel McGee, of the home; two daughters, Merredith Newman and her husband Adam, and their children, Zoie and Zander, and Dr. Myranda Golla and her husband Cody; one brother, Dennis Cathey and his wife Alice; a sister, Wanda McCuller and her husband Bill; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Julie; and parents-in-law, Elmer Don and Myrtle Lee McGee.
