Lonnie's Story

Lonnie Cleo Sturgeon, 87, of McAlester, died Sunday, May 7, 2017, at a local nursing center.
Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Greenwood Cemetery in Eufaula with Jimmy Utley officiating.
Lonnie was born on Aug. 27, 1929, in Mangrum, to Fines and Nettie (Barrett) Sturgeon. He graduated from Eufaula High School in 1948 and then joined the United States Army National Guard and was mobilized to Korea. He was in the Korean War and was a corporal by the time he was honorably discharged.
He married Coleta Marlene Sherrill on Feb. 28, 1952, in Eufaula. Lonnie returned to McAlester and continued his career in printing. He worked at the McAlester News-Capital and the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant for many years, retiring in 1987.
Lonnie was a member of the Church of Christ.
He enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, Fox News and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. Lonnie also liked to play golf. Lonnie coached at the Boys & Girls Club and refereed football and basketball games for many years.
Lonnie is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Sturgeon, of Orlando, Florida; a son, Benjamin Sturgeon and wife, Linda, of Orlando, Florida; grandchildren, Nathaniel Wyatt, of Irving, Texas, Jeffrey Wyatt, of Irving, Texas, and Andrew Sturgeon, of Tulsa; sisters, Hazel Utley, of Edmond, Nina Fay Cunningham, of Adamson, and Patsy Mayse, of Leonard, Texas; brother, Wayne Sturgeon, of Tahlequah, and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fines and Nettie Sturgeon; his wife, Coleta Sturgeon; his son, Jeffrey Sturgeon; brothers, Joseph Sturgeon, Everett Sturgeon, Finis Sturgeon Jr., and Leo Sturgeon, and sisters, Helen Pope and Lois Gould.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made Alzheimer's Association of Oklahoma.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Marilyn and David Meredith for many years of care and Barbara and Danny Morgan for their care while Lonnie was at Walnut Grove Living Center in McAlester.
