Geneva Shackelford, 97, of the Ulan and Tannehill areas, died Thursday, June 29, 2017, at Mitchell Manor Convalescent Center.
Geneva was born on March 5, 1920, in Kiowa, to Harper and Ella Medley. She grew up in the Scipio Community as one of 10 children. She graduated from Indianola High School and was Valedictorian of her class.
She married Lelan on Oct. 16, 1948, in McAlester. They lived in the Ulan and Tannehill Community where they farmed and ranched. She worked alongside Lelan in the fields and with nature. A great cook, she loved feeding family and friends.
She was a devout Christian, influencing the lives of many. She was a faithful member of Scipio Baptist Church until she was unable to attend.
She is survived by a sister, Agnus Skillern, of Bethany; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Donna Shackelford, of McAlester; grandchildren and spouses, Aubry and Jean Shackelford, of Lancaster, Massachusetts; Laura and Mark Giove, of Whitman, Massachusetts; seven great-grandchildren, Mason, Sarah, Allison, Lawson, Louden, Alex and Mattea; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Medley and Helen Medley, and many nieces, nephews and friends of the Scipio, Tannehill and Ulan area.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Linda Diann Cobb; husband, Lelan; brothers, Marvin, Floyd, Cecil and Ed, and sisters, Lorane, Lilian, Oleta and Betty.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of McAlester, Kawasaki Disease Foundation, or the Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
