His life will be celebrated with a memorial service on Wednesday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Chapel with Dr. Matt Judkins officiating, followed by an informal time of fellowship of family and friends.
Roi Nelson was born on September 29, 1952, in McAlester, the son of Dr. LeRoi Elwyn and Annette (Hennen) Nelson. Roi grew up in the First Presbyterian Church where he was part of the youth group and the boy scouts. He attended Will Rogers Elementary School, McAlester Junior High School, and graduated from McAlester High School with the Class of 1970.
Roi enjoyed sports and played little league baseball, then in high school was the leading player on the golf team.
He attended the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He graduated in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
After graduation he worked at a men's wear store in Oklahoma City before going to work for Firestone Corp. in their credit department.
Roi then had the opportunity to return to McAlester when the First National Bank hired him as a teller. That's when he realized he enjoyed the banking business and made a long career of it. He went to work as a loan officer and vice-president at The Bank, NA until he was transferred to Stillwater to be the president of The Bank NA of Stillwater, where he stayed for several years.
He continued his education in banking by graduating from the Southern Methodist University Graduate School of Banking in 1986.
Roi was a very social person and the banking business was a good fit for him. In 1990, he and Debbie Fluegel were married. They returned to McAlester in 2000, where Roi was hired as director and executive vice-president of First National Bank.
In 2004, Wanda Bass and Bruce Hall, chairman and chief executive officer, respectively, appointed Roi as president of First National Bank. Then in June, 2006, Roi was appointed CEO.
Roi had a wonderful personality and enjoyed entertaining with friends and family. He served as vice chairman of the McAlester Regional Hospital Foundation and was a member of the McAlester Rotary Club. He served on the executive committee of the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture's Board of Directors.
Roi was an excellent golfer and had served as president of the McAlester Country Club. He also loved fishing and became quite proficient at fly fishing.
Roi is survived by his wife, Debbie Nelson; sons, Dr. Ryan Nelson and Natalie, of Edmond, and Zachary Nelson, of Broken Arrow; step-sons, Matt Fluegel and Billie, of Broken Arrow, and Adam Fluegel and Hope, of Glenpool; nine grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Mike Nelson and Alexis, of Muskogee; a sister, Cindy Laffoon, of Lantana, Texas, and nieces and nephews.
