William F. Ellington The Rev. Dr. William F. Ellington, died on September 21, 2018.
A native Texan, Father Bill was born on September 20, 1934, in Arlington, Texas, to Bennett Ferrell Ellington and Irene (Lester) Ellington. After growing up on a cattle ranch and receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas, he received his master of divinity degree from Seabury Western Theological Seminary in May 1964, and was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church on December 18, 1964, in the Diocese of Dallas.
He and his wife, Patt, were married in 1977 in Pryor.
Throughout his nearly 54 years as a priest, Father Bill served congregations in Texas, Oklahoma, Wyoming and California. He also served as a United States Navy Reserve chaplain up to the rank of commander for 20 years.
He held a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and worked as a psychologist in numerous capacities over the years.
After officially retiring from the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles in 2000, he and Patt returned to McAlester, where he began a 10 year stint with the Department of Corrections as a psychologist at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and clinical coordinator for prisons in eastern Oklahoma. He retired (again) in 2010.
Father Bill served as Vicar at Trinity Episcopal Church in Eufaula beginning in 2000, and also continued to work as a psychologist in McAlester until his death.
Father Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Patsy Young.
He is survived by his wife, Patt; daughters, Tamra Rains and Boyd, Jantha Flud, and Tamrah Briggs and Brent; son, David Ellington; grandchildren, Angela Dill, Steven Dill, Nicholas Rains, Alexa Rains, Ian Rains, Frank Flud, Charly Briggs and Nathan Briggs; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Trinity Episcopal Church, 305 West High in Eufaula at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 1.
