William "Bill"'s Story
William "Bill" McCullar, 87, of McAlester, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at his home in McAlester.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 7, at Lakewood Christian Church with Pastor Cliff House officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Hartshorne. Military honors will be provided by McAlester Veterans of Foreign Ward, Post 1098. Arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
William "Bill" McCullar was born on March 11, 1929, in Hartshorne, to Howard and Hettie Mae (Jordan) McCullar. He grew up there and graduated from Haileyville High School, after which he attended Eastern State College.
After graduating college, Bill enlisted into the United States Army for 2 years, serving in Korea during the Korea War.
Upon returning home from the war, Bill attended Okmulgee Tech, where he learned his trade of auto body repair.
He then married Cecelia Ann Volturo on Jan. 25, 1958, in Hartshorne. He and Cecelia made their home in Oklahoma City where they raised their four children.
While in Oklahoma City, Bill worked for Keefer Garage for seven years, continuing his passion with auto body repair, he then worked for Leeway Motor Freight for 12 years.
Bill and Cecelia moved to Haileyville in 1975 and bought the old Smallwood Body Shop in Haileyville and operated it as McCullar's Body Shop for 20 years, working alongside his wife and two boys before retiring.
Bill was always active in his church. While in Haileyville, he was a member of Haileyville Christian Church, where he served as Deacon and Elder, as well as teaching a Bible study class. When they moved to McAlester in 2005, they moved their church membership to Lakewood Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Cecelia Ann McCullar; two daughters and one son-in-law, Janelle O'Kelley, of Hartshorne, and Lisa and Geronimo Cohen, of Arch; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Rhonda McCullar, of Hartshorne, and Keith and Denise McCullar, of McAlester; eight grandchildren, Autumn Thurman and husband, Daniel, of Durant, Ashley Faulkner and husband, Justin, of Hartshorne, Mallori Rodgers and husband, Preston, of McAlester, Lindsey Waugh and husband, Kenny, of Hartshorne, Eric O'Kelley, of Hartshorne, Felicia Hunt, of Hartshorne, Robert Hunt, of Tulsa, and Candace Hunt, of Stuart; great-grandchildren, Axel, Aspen and Ayce Thurman, of Durant, Cash Faulkner, of Hartshorne, Tatum Rodgers, of McAlester, Kenley and Carson Waugh, of Hartshorne, and Kailey and Seth Hunt, and Alexus Williams, of Hartshorne; brother-in-law, Paul Volturo and wife, Sandra, of McAlester; sister-in-law, Opal McCullar, of McAlester, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edger, Jack and J.D.; three sisters, Gladine, Geraldine and Ruth, and a son-in-law, Buddy O'Kelley.
Pallbearers will be Eric O'Kelley, Robert Hunt, Preston Rodgers, Daniel Thurman, Justin Faulkner and Kenny Waugh.
