Tressie's Story

Tressie Elizabeth (Jones) Huggins, 98, a lifelong resident of McAlester, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, in Norman.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Bishop Chapel of Memories officiated by the the Rev. Porter. Burial will follow at North Town Cemetery in McAlester.
Pallbearers will be Hayden Baker, Everett Phifer, Leander Keith Jr., Elvis Keith, Terry Campbell and Darrell Trammell.
Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandsons, Jameil and Micah Barnett.
Mrs. Huggins was born to Sidney and Rosie Wolaridge Jones on April 19, 1919, in Reams. She graduated from L'Ouverture School in 1941. She then attended Eastern Oklahoma State College and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in home economics.
Mrs. Huggins began her working career at L'Ouverture school and McAlester school as a cook and supervisor. In 1975, she worked for The Bank NA as a cook until retiring in 1985.
During retirement, she worked for the city of McAlester summer lunch program as a cook.
Mrs. Huggins was a faithful lifelong member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church. She served as superintendent of Sunday school and was a member of the Missionary Society.
In 2013, she became a member and church mother at St. John Church at Brooksville.
She was an active member of the Central Wayland District Association and Committee of the L'Ouverture Alumni Association. She joined the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Club and Grandmothers Ready to Help Club. Her passion for baking produced several ribbons at the Pittsburg County Fair for her specialty, yeast rolls and cinnamon rolls.
Mrs. Huggins is survived by a daughter, Beverly Warren and husband, Dean; granddaughter, Angelia Barnett; great-grandchildren, Amiri Barnett, Jameil Barnett, Micah Barnett, Alanah Barnett, Annalise Barnett, and Avery Barnett, all of Norman; sisters, Mary Liggins, and Kathleen White and husband, Karlin, all of Wichita, Kansas, and Doris Jones, of Stockton, California, and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members, and special friends, May Bell Patterson and Helen Johnson.
Mrs. Huggins was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Rosie Jones; her husband, Frazier Huggins; brothers, R.L. Jones, Johnny Jones, Cecil Jones, Thomas Jones, and Billy Ray Jones, and sisters, Hualdy Jones and Celestine Daniels.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory of McAlester.
