Shirley's Story

Text size

We have lost our wonderful mother today. Shirley Joan (Allen) Laughlin Garrison joined the Lord and passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Wednesday, April 5, 2017. The Lord called her and she was met at the gates by Gary and Randy. Mom lived to be 76 years young.
Shirley was born on Oct. 2, 1940, in McAlester, to William and Mamie Allen. Shirley attended and graduated from McAlester High School.
In her earlier years, she worked at the McAlester Naval Ammunition Plant and Komar before starting with the Department of Corrections and retiring from Jackie Brannon Correctional Center.
On Oct. 7, 1988, she married the love of her life, Gary Don Garrison. They enjoyed attending church, camping, cookouts but, most of all, a good game of rummy. Mom would not let you leave her house without playing a hand of rummy with her.
Mom was a member of Pathway of Truth Church in Krebs. Mom read her Bible and said her prayers every night before going to bed.
Shirley is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law and their families, Robert Laughlin, of Krebs, David and Kristi Laughlin, of McAlester. One daughter and son-in-law, Tami and Darryl Wagoner, of McAlester. Four grandsons and their families, Jason and Davey Travis with Zayden and Haskell, of Stillwater, Brandon Travis, of McAlester, Kaleb and Kaitlyn Wagoner with Kaisley, of McAlester, and Chance Wagoner and his girlfriend, Misty Alexander, and their future daughter, Kennedy Grace, due April 16, 2017; one sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Ray Izard, of Elk City; one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Alice Allen, of Meridian, Indiana; a special cousin, Mary Prince; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Troy and Shannon Garrison, of Shawnee; two sisters-in-law, Faye Rail, of Mill Creek, and Bessie Coplen, of Sulphur, and a host of other cousins, nephews and nieces too numerous to list but not forgotten. Special friends, JoAnn Treannie, of McAlester, and Bill Lovett, of Krebs.
We would like to give special thanks and much love to Hospice of McAlester, Dr. John B. Cotton, Jennifer Metcalf, Cathy Anderson, Debbie Gragg, Jane Armstrong, John Cotton Jr., Sherri Davis, Erica Hubyca and Jessica Casey. They were loving, compassionate and treated us like family and they were always there when we needed them.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Garrison, on Nov. 28, 2016; her son, Randy Laughlin, on Jan. 30, 2016; her parents, William and Mamie Allen, and her brothers, Charles Allen and Louis Allen.
Funeral arrangements are with Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.
Family will receive visitors today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Crowder Cemetery pavilion. Pastor James Harris will officiate. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jason Travis, Brandon Travis, Kaleb Wagoner and Chance Wagoner.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of McAlester, 801 East Wyandotte, McAlester, OK, 74501. 918-423-3911.
