Rev. Leon's Story
Rev. Leon Anthony Sparks Sr., 74, of McAlester, died at his home on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017.
There will be a visitation today at Bishop Funeral Home between 6 and 8 p.m.
Services are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 6, at Bishop Chapel of Memories at 10 a.m. The services will be officiated by the Rev. Fred Morrison. Burial will be at Tannehill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Phil Joyce, Mikeal Fisk, Joseph Barlow, Daniel Morrison, Darrell Lyons and Matthew Phillips.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Brooks, Maurice Gray and Frank Medley.
Anthony was born on Dec. 24, 1942, to Leon Alonzo and Lena Oleta Bernhardt Sparks in Picher. He grew up and attended schools in Haywood.
Anthony was married to Jeanie Mitchell on Oct. 11, 2008. He worked as a ranch foreman and worked for W.E. Allford Ranch and as a truck driver at T.H. Rogers Lumber Company until his retirement.
Anthony attended the Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. He preached at the Tannehill Free Will Baptist Church from 1991 until 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanie Sparks, of the home; his children and spouses, Lance and Rachel Sparks, of Texas, Leon Anthony Jr. (Tony Jr.) and Cassandra Sparks, of McAlester, Ronnie and Jodi Norman, of California, Patty Ann Sparks, of McAlester, Cindy and Shannon (Crash) Barkley, of McAlester, Selena Srader, of the home, John Heck, of Kiowa, Virginia and Josh Odell, of McAlester, and James Heck, of McAlester. His grandchildren, Amanda Sparks, Angelena and Mikeal Fisk, Rachel and Daniel Morrison, Matthew and Jeni Phillips, Jessica and Bill Martin, Joseph Barlow, Cody and Cassie Sparks, Jessica and Chris Simpson, Quay Sparks, Sierra Sparks, Liam Sparks, Ryder Randolph and Gage Randolph. Seventeen great-grandchildren; two siblings, Lemuel Hodges Jr., and Faye Price, and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.
Anthony was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Oleta Sparks; his wife, Patsy Sparks, in 2002, and a granddaughter, Melissa Phillips.
