Odell Melton, 94, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2017, one month before his 95th birthday.
The family is receiving friends at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services are Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Savanna. Burial will follow at Redden Cemetery. Arrangements ae under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Jeffery Osborne Jr., Caleb Mann, Carson Mann, Terrence Isom Jr., Bryan Keeler and Conrad Littlejohn.
The men of First Baptist Church of Savanna are honorary pallbearers.
Odell R. Melton was born on Dec. 10, 1922, in DeQueen, Arkansas, to Webbie and Pearl (Vaughn) Melton. He grew up in the Daisy area and married Kathryn Mildred Littlejohn on Feb. 24, 1942, in Antlers.
In 1943 he joined the United States Army and was involved in battles in Normandy and Northern France.
Odell and Kathryn moved to Savanna in 1950, where they made their home for the next 60 plus years.
Odell worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot for over 30 years, retiring in 1979 as an inspection supervisor.
He was a longtime member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Savanna.
He enjoyed going hunting and fishing and was well known for his willingness to help others. He especially enjoyed growing his garden each year and sharing the bounty with his family and church members and anyone else, for that matter.
Odell is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Odell and Cathy Melton, of Choctaw; a daughter, Patricia Ann Pollock, of the home; grandchildren, Cheryl Osborne and Jeff Sr., Brian Reeves, Michelle Mann and Mark and Michael Melton and Cindy; great-grandchildren, Jeffery Osborne Jr. and Jessica, Stephenie Keeler and Bryan, Laura Isom and Terrence Jr., Carlie Reeves, Caleb Mann, Carson Mann, Caitlyn Melton, Caylee Mann and Catherine Melton; a great-great-grandchild on the way, and one sister, Estelle Northrip, of Tishomingo.
Odell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn, in 2013; brothers, Dewey, Coy, Haskell, Edward and Chellis, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
