Neta Jan Wilkins

December 08, 1959 - August 04, 2018

Neta Jan (Staples) Wilkins, beloved wife, mother, nana, teacher and friend passed away peacefully at her home on August 4, 2018, surrounded by her family.
Jan was born on December 8, 1958, in McAlester, and was the daughter of Bill and Jean (Roberson) Staples.
Growing up in McAlester, she attended McAlester Public Schools (MPS), graduating in 1977. She then attended Oklahoma State University receiving a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1981.
Jan married Kent Wilkins, of Kiowa, on August 4, 1984. They lived in Oklahoma City where she furthered her education receiving a master's degree in early childhood education from the University of Central Oklahoma.
Jan's teaching career began in Oklahoma City where she taught 2nd grade at a Putnam City elementary school.
Jan and Kent then returned to McAlester in 1990 where she taught at Emerson Elementary.
She later received certification in Special Education and Psychometry from East Central University and continued her employment with MPS concentrating on early childhood services until her retirement in April 2015.
Teaching was always a joy to her and never just a job. Jan had a special ability and heart to identify learning difficulties of children with special needs. She touched so many lives in her classroom.
She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of McAlester.
Jan's passions included her family (especially her Mia), faith, students, miniature donkeys and, of course, all Oklahoma State University sports (Go Pokes).
Jan faced a 3-and-one-half year battle with cancer, but never once questioned her faith. She displayed immense courage and strength while maintaining a positive attitude.
Jan is survived by her husband of 34 years, Kent Wilkins, of the home; daughter, Jacy Dyson and husband, Corbin, of Elk City; son, Josh Wilkins, of Oklahoma City; parents, Bill and Jean Staples, of McAlester; sister, Julie Brunett and husband, Jamie, of Allen, Texas; father-in-law, Joe Wilkins, of Kiowa; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Dobbins and husband, Bobby, of Durant; brother-in-law, Ronnie Wilkins and wife, Sherril, of Kiowa; one granddaughter, Mia Tate Dyson, of Elk City, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, J.D. and Corene Roberson; paternal grandparents, Alex and Celestia Staples, and mother-in-law, Mary Wilkins.
Pallbearers will be Rocky Roberson, Michael Roberson, Jeff Roberson, David Bruton, Shawn Sisco, Beau Wilkins, Jamie Brunett and Lance Hess.
Honorary pallbearers will be the MPS Class of 1977.
Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church of McAlester with Dr. Matt Judkins officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Section of Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Services of McAlester.

Wilkins and Roberson families; I am so sorry for your loss of Jan. J.D. and Corene lived across the road and up the hill from us when I was a small child. I've known them and Jean and Jan all my life.
