Merle Lebbs, 101, of McAlester, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018 at a local nursing center. The family will receive friends at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home on Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 13, at 10:00 a.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are Samantha Brownlee, Daniel Wilson, Scott Wilson, C. L. Moore, Jr., Michael Tripp and Rykken Brownlee.
Merle Lebbs was born on April 16, 1917 in Neligh, Neb. to George Henry and Agnes Sophia (Schulz) Lebbs. In 1935, after graduating high school in 1934, he joined the U. S. Navy, and served until his retirement in 1955. During his service he sailed in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, serving on the USS Lexington and then the USS D. L. Howard. After his military service he worked in Civil Service at the Longbeach Shipyard for several years, before moving to McAlester
He married Beatrice Addie Merryman on Oct. 11, 1947 in Carson City, Nevada, and after 47 years of marriage, she preceded him in death in 1995. Merle is survived by a brother, Richard Lebbs of Denison, Iowa; cousins, Marsha Houston of Oxnard, CA., Donna McCullough of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter, Shaney Mathews of Colorado; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and life time friends; and a special friend, Rebecca Bornheim and family.
