Luralei Ruth Herrick (Cravens), 73, of McAlester, died Thursday, March 30, 2017, in McAlester.
The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in McAlester.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 3, at Brumley-Mills Chapel with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
Luralei was born on June 29, 1943, in Vancouver, Washington, to Richard Anderson Nelson and Ruth Eloise Nelson (Trauernicht). She grew up in Hastings, Nebraska, and graduated from Hastings High School in 1961. She attended college at Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri, before returning home to Hastings.
Luralei was married to Wesley Philip Herrick at Hastings Assembly of God Church on May 8, 1965. In 1965, Luralei and Wesley Herrick moved to McAlester, where Wesley went to work at the United States Naval Ammunition Depot.
Luralei went to work as church secretary at First Assembly of God Church in August 1965. Luralei served as church secretary for 43 years for several Assembly of God pastors, including but not limited to, Jack Manley, Billy Martin and Jerry Burnside.
Luralei's life was a testament to service for the Lord. During her service for the Lord, she also served her church in such other capacities as Sunday school teacher, children's Sunday school director, children's church teacher and director, children's puppet ministry, VBS teacher and director, CA director, youth leader, youth choir director, Missionette teacher and director, Royal Rangers director, bus ministry, pianist, organist, church choir member and director, singles group director and church secretary-treasurer. Her calm and gentle spirit was a comfort to many as she ministered to those in need.
Luralei enjoyed traveling, playing dominoes, gospel music, coin collecting, spending time with her children, grandchildren and other family members and worshiping the Lord.
Luralei is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Laura Herrick; her grandchildren, Jackson, Jenilee, Jonathan, Colten and Carsen, all of McAlester; her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Randy Weatherford, of Okmulgee; her grandchild, Lana Peters (Weatherford) and husband, Shaun Peters; her great grandchildren, Karyn, Titan and Raider, all of Broken Arrow; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Bonnie Nelson, of Rogers, Arkansas, and her nephews, Christopher and Shane Nelson.
Luralei was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Herrick, and by her parents, Richard Anderson Nelson and Ruth Eloise Nelson.
Pallbearers will by Nick Arnold, Max Clark, John Meshaya, Dennis McMath, Marvin Simmons and Brent Bowling.
