Lillian's Story

Lillian Kathryn Wood, 100, of McAlester, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, in Tulsa.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 13, at Bishop Chapel of Memories officiated by the Rev. Jody Domingue. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery in McAlester.
Pallbearers will be Tom Cook, Jim Cook, Nate Cook, Ben Pearson, Jeff Yarbrough and Mel Yarbrough.
Lillian was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Russett, to Jesse and Leannah (Hallmark) Hazlewood. She graduated from Atoka High School and then attended Murray State and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She earned a master's degree in education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
She married Vestel Wood on June 24, 1947, in Okemah.
Lillian rode a horse to her first teaching job at Peaceable. She taught business classes for many schools in Pittsburg County including Crowder, Haywood, Quinton and Savanna, where she retired from in 1978.
Lillian enjoyed traveling and visiting her family. She made award winning "Best in Show" Chow-Chow that will be missed. She also quilted, sewed, crocheted afghans and made clothing and teddy bears and other crafts.
She was a member of Victory Park Baptist Church.
Lillian is survived by her daughter, Jane Wood, of the home; sons, Larry Wood and wife, Judy, of Bakersfield, California, and Lynn Wood, of Bugtussle; a niece that she raised as her own, Iline Eubanks and husband, Paschal, of Muskogee; grandchildren, Sarah Pickard, Jesse Wood and Matthew Wood; great-grandchildren, Lauren Pickard, Melony Wood and Hayden Wood; a sister, Ann Anderson, of Muskogee, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Jesse and Leannah Hazlewood; her husband, Vestel Wood, in 1993; sister, Beulah Jenson; brothers, Jim Hazlewood, Vestal Hazlewood and Clarence Hazlewood, and a niece that she raised as her own, Margie Lang.
