Leon was born to Lawrence Levi and Faye (Martin) Adams on July 3, 1930, in Stuart. He attended school in Stuart and graduated from Stuart High School in 1948.
Leon married Vicki Herrera on June 6, 1960, in Santa Maria, California. By this time, Leon was a rancher and an accomplished professional animal act performer. He also was a steer wrestler and calf roper for many years in rodeo.
For parts of five decades, the husband-and-wife team of Leon and Vicki Adams entertained rodeo fans all over the world with their specialty acts, which included their form of horsemanship, innovative flair and skill in training animals. Leon was inducted into the National Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City in 2004, and he and Vicki were inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2008.
Leon Adams received the PRCA Specialty Act of the Year Award in 1982. Leon and Vicki twice won the award together, in 1987 and 1997, and they were nominated for the award 19 consecutive years.
Leon learned to Roman ride horses by riding his father's work horses standing atop their backs to and from the field every day in Stuart. He got his first paying job in the arena at age 12, made trick riding his career shortly after graduating from high school, and just kept adding to his repertoire.
Looking for something truly different, he trained Geronimo and Apache to become the first Brahma bulls to be part of a Roman riding act. He also trained bulls to leap over a Cadillac convertible and through fiery hoops and driving a team of six horses while riding roman style on the wheel team. Leon retired from the arena in 2005 to devote full time to his family and his ranch where he and Vicki raised pure bred Brahmans and cross bred cattle.
Leon was a member of Stuart Church of Christ and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by wife, Vicki Lynn Adams, of the home; daughter, Kerri Lynn Fields and her husband, Lance, of Stuart; son, Winford Leon Adams and his wife, Patricia, of Claremore; grandchildren, Jadee Lynn Hall, and Zayne Allen Goode, both of Stuart, and Levi Paul Adams and wife, Britni, of Claremore; father-in-law, Bill Herrera; special friend and brother-in-law, Derald Dean McNutt and Linda Brown, of Stuart; sister-in-law, Bobbi Herrer, of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada; brother-in-law, Billy Herrera; niece, Micki Dahn Akard and her husband, Jay, of Stuart; special friend, Bob Sherry, and other family members and friends.
