Lawanda Kay Sam, 72, of McAlester, died Thursday, February 22, 2018, at her home.
Kay was born on December 5, 1945, to Carl and Opal (Arthur) Phelps, in Borger, Texas. She attended school in Phillips, Texas.
She was a housewife and a licensed beautician. She passed her Texas exam in 1981. She also worked as a home health provider.
She married Charles Sam on August 2, 1967, in Borger, Texas, and they had two daughters.
Kay is survived by her husband, Charles Sam, of the home; two daughters, Christie Farmer and husband, Randy, of McAlester, and Kendra Sam and husband, Jeremy, of Lajunta, Colorado; grandchildren, Warren Jackson, Carly Sam, Destinee Moore and Ashley Hampton; great-grandchildren, Braylee Klotz, Baylee Jackson, Bentlee Jackson, Brandon McAnally, Bryson McAnally and Braxton McAnally; brother, Ryland Phelps. of Amarillo, Texas; brothers-in-law, Jimmy Sam and wife, Emma, of Kyle, South Dakota, and Dennis Sam, of McAlester; sisters-in-law, Bessie Sam and Virgil Sam, of McAlester, and Louise Mitchell and husband, Bill, of Hartshorne, and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Kay was preceded in death by parents, Carl and Opal Phelps; brother, Aubrey Phelps; sisters, Virginia Bagwell and Christine Graves, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Velma Sue Hood, Murray Hood, Johnny Sam and Tommy Sam.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at Indian Baptist Church in McAlester with the Rev. Randy Farmer officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Warren Jackson, Rex Mancuso, Ryland Phelps Jr., Douglas Sam, Roy Dee Hood and Landon Mitchell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Mitchell, Rex Bagwell, Virgil Sam, Phil Mancuso, Jeff Lanier, Jeremy Altman and Tommy Mitchell.
