Justin Turvey was born on Oct. 6, 1986, in Oklahoma City. His family lived in Edmond and moved to McAlester when Justin was five years old, and Justin had lived here since. He graduated from McAlester High School in 2005 and then attended Eastern State College.
He pursued his passion of helping others by graduating and earning his emergency medical technician certification in 2009. He worked as an EMT in Hartshorne and graduated from CLEET in 2010. Justin also served as a volunteer deputy sheriff and a part-time police officer at Hartshorne. At one point, as an EMT, he saved the life of a little baby with his CPR skills, and helped so many with his Christian witness.
He loved his sister, Autumn, and his nieces and nephew so much. He called his nephew, Jacob, his "lil buddy".
Justin's friend, Will Ardese, said it so eloquently, that Justin told him on a recent visit at church, that his favorite book of the Bible was Philippians, "because it was filled with joy in the presence of struggles." In this earthly life, we have struggles that are difficult to overcome, but with Jesus as our Savior, we know eternal life is given.
Justin loved his friends and he had so many. "His smile could light up a room", his humor would make us laugh, and his love for his family was so powerful.
Justin is survived by his mother, Marilyn Monus-Turvey; his father and his wife, Mark and Renee Turvey; his sister and brother-in-law, Autumn and Rob Gwin; nieces, Grace and Emily Gwin, and nephew, Jacob "Buddy" Gwin. Also, grandparents, George and Tonya Turvey; aunts and uncles, Jeanie Cyphers, Stacia and Doug Enns, and Susan and Brit Fisher, and numerous cousins.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or to Teen Challenge of Oklahoma.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Brumley-Mills Funeral Funeral Home of McAlester.
