Joy passed from us on September 8, 2017 after a prolonged illness. She was born November 11, 1948 to Leoma and Elisha Brown in McAlester, Oklahoma. She was the fourth of five children.
Joy excelled in academics, graduating from McAlester High School in 1967. Through a combination of work/study programs and grants, she paid her way through Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1971 with a degree in English Education. She saw potential and agreed to marry her high school sweetheart, Jerry Greer, on August 22, 1970. And they became two sides of the same coin for the ensuing 47 years. They have four children and are now blessed with seven grandchildren.
Joy worked several jobs helping support Jerry through dental school in Dallas, Texas and oral surgery training in San Antonio, Texas. They moved to Tulsa and have resided there since 1979. She has since worked at various positions in his dental office. She has been involved in a variety of charitable activities over the years, and was chairman of the Auction, Book Fair, and PTA president at Holland Hall School. She served in several positions for the Oklahoma Dental Alliance.
She has been a life-long learner, an avid reader, and a sewer of quilts for her grandchildren. She loved to travel and has been all over the United States, to Europe, Asia, and Africa.
While possessing many, her greatest gift was the ability to listen to people and care about their story. Perfect strangers would share their life story with her and she would remember it. When given the chance, she could relate the life histories of friends and relatives at length. Her greatest pleasure by far was seeing her children grow up and their accomplishments. She would encourage and aid them however she could to achieve whatever goal they pursued. She would never accept the idea that they could not do what they wanted.
We who knew Joy were richer and blessed by that acquaintance. If there is a heaven and if there are angels with which we are rewarded for being Christian, a Godly person, and having a life well lived, then she is there now, singing and dancing at full speed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Billey, and one sister, Judith. She is survived by her husband Jerry, son Jon (Sheri) of Tulsa, son David (Erin) of Fort Worth, son Paul (Carrie) of Fort Worth, and daughter Bethany Monroe (Carter) of Tulsa; grandchildren, Jack, Sam, Haden, Aubrey, Addison, Emily, and Cole. Also surviving are her brothers Terry Brown (Kitty) of Vinita, Kenny Brown (Diane) of Edmond, multiple cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Scott Carter Foundation for children's cancer research, or Asbury United Methodist Church.
A reception will be held at Joy and Jerry's house from 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, September 14 and a memorial service at Asbury United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Friday, September 15th at 11:00.
