Joshua Clyde Pickens, 83, of McAlester, died Friday, August 18, 2017, in Talihina.
The family will receive friends at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hartshorne with the Rev. Clint Pope officiating. Burial will follow at Brushy Baptist Cemetery in Blanco.
Josh Pickens was born on Oct. 15, 1933, in Blanco. Josh was raised and grew up in the Blanco and Hartshorne area all of his life. He lost his mother at the age of seven and seven siblings prior to that age. His education consisted of his dad sending him to Jones Academy B.I.A. Boarding School where he went until his dad became ill. He left school and started working to provide for him and his two younger sisters. Not old enough to be legally hired as a laborer, his paying jobs were sporadic but most notable was breaking horses.
He wed Bertha LaVerne (Wilcox) Pickens on Aug. 31, 1952. As he started his own family he came back to work at the B.I.A. Jones Academy boarding school where he worked in the maintenance department until the Choctaw Nation took it over in 1985.
After that he was with Pittsburg County District 1 until his retirement. Before he found employment with the B.I.A., he worked at Little Dixie Packing Company, cutting meat and shoeing horses which helped compensate with extra income. That is how he paid for gas and rodeo entry fees.
His hobbies included squirrel hunting, rodeos, grandkids and TELLING STORIES.
Josh was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hartshorne and a member of the Choctaw Nation.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha Pickens; three sons and daughters-in-law, Sonnie and Tammy Pickens, Joe and Jan Pickens, and John and Lisa Pickens; one daughter and son-in-law, Patti and David Scott; 13 grandchildren and spouses, Chris Pickens, Karissa and Paul Pickett, Tray and Paula Mercer, Tyenne Mercer, Amancha and Brent Wood, C.W. and Tani Scott, Latassha Pickens, Jade and Greg Stohel, Jedidiah Pickens, Kayla Henry, Isom and Annie Pickens, Colten and Amanda Pickens, and Charmayne Pickens and Rodie Owen Pickens; 17 great-grandchildren, Addleigh Pickett, Traylee Mercer, Karter Gracye Mercer, Sidney and Jacob Elmore, Rihannon Pickens, Sativia Richie, Dalton and Sadie Wood, Jett Wood, Trinity Wood, Brentlee Wood, Talon Scott, Reecie Scott, Jagger Stohel, Raylenna Pickens, Hanna Johnson, Josiah Johnson, Aysha Johnson; five great-great-grandchildren, Sophie Elmore, Pepper Houston, Jace Richie, Audrina Wood and Lakyn Wood; one brother-in-law, Carl Boling, and several nieces and nephews.
