Johnnie Hernandez, 76, of McAlester, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, at his son's home.
The family will greet friends today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Bishop Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Matt Rosenow officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Haywood. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force.
Johnnie was born on Nov. 1, 1941, in McAlester, to Linzel and Jimmie (Cameron) Hernandez. Shortly after graduating high school in entered the U.S. Air Force.
Serving his country in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, Johnnie earned his retirement in 1980.
He returned to McAlester and began his career at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. He worked as a supervisor in storage, shipping and receiving until his retirement in 2000.
Johnnie married Mary Hernandez on June 21, 1990, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. They made their home in the Haywood Community.
He enjoyed being in the outdoors, taking care of his place, feeding and watching the squirrels and birds. Johnnie also was a woodworker making numerous household items and furniture.
He was a member of the Arpelar Baptist Church.
Johnnie was survived by his son, John Hernandez and wife, Ginger, of the home, and grandchildren, Bryce Hernandez and wife, Rebecca, of Kansas City, Missouri, Micah Hernandez and wife, Sydney, of McAlester, Brayden Hernandez, of the home, and Samantha Lewis and husband, Bo, of Kiowa. Also, great-grandchildren, Amelia and Alex Hernandez; brother, Max Quinn and wife, Neotha, of McAlester; step-sons, Shane Swboni, of Coweta, and George Swboni, of Haileyville; step grandchildren, Austin Swboni, of Edmond, Garrett Swboni, of Coweta, Kaleb Swboni, of Lawton, and Brianna Swboni, of Crowder; a step-great-granddaughter, Kacyn Beth Swboni, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Hernandez, and brothers, Roy Quinn and Wesley Quinn
The family would like to give a very special thank you to Dr. Ali Moussa and Dr. Joshua Garren for their outstanding care for Johnnie.
