Jim McLeod of McAlester, passed from this life March 2, 2017. He was born on August 16, 1931, in McAlester to Howard and Ruby (Heasley) McLeod.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Main & Oklahoma Church of Christ on Monday, March 6, 2017, at 2 p.m. with Darryl Bowdre, Red Coleman and Mark Henry officiating. Burial will be at the family plot in Oak Hill Cemetery beside his wife, son, mother and father. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 5 at Bishop Funeral Service.
Upon graduation from McAlester High School in 1949, Jim attended Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore. He married Katherine Knox on March 4, 1951, and enjoyed almost 59 years of married bliss. Katherine passed away in 2010. They were the parents of a son, Scott Howard (deceased), and daughter, Pamela Anne.
He was mobilized with the 45th Infantry Division in September of 1950. Upon his return to civilian life in October of 1951, he began his career with the Department of Defense at the Naval Ammunition Depot in McAlester. He rejoined the 45th upon its reorganization in 1953. After serving as a Non-Commissioned Officer for 10 years he applied for a commission as an officer. After 32 years in the National Guard and Army Reserve he retired as a Captain in the position of Battalion S-3.
First and foremost, he was an elder of the Main and Oklahoma Church of Christ in McAlester. He attended this church all of his life and served in various capacities including teacher, deacon and elder. This was the most important and satisfying role of his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela, his grandson and wife, Scott and Ansley Allen; his great-granddaughters: Keona and Reece; his brother-in-law, Fred Henry of Frankfort, Michigan. His nephews and their wives also survived him, Bryhn McLeod, North Andover, Massachusetts; LTC (Ret) Mark and Lez Henry of Waco, Texas; Cliff and Leslie Henry of Winter Springs, Florida; Doug and Julie Henry of St. Joseph, Michigan. Also his nieces and their husbands: Sherril McLeod and Phil Arnold of Amelia Island, Florida; Pat and Tom Sheller of Laurel Hill, North Carolina; Christie McLeod-Muir and Grant Muir of New Zealand; Leslie and John O'Boyle of Kailua, Hawaii; Lyn and Jason Carden of Savannah, Georgia and many, many friends.
Active pallbearers will be Tom Patterson, Mike Dusenberry, James Vercelli, Don Hicks, Jerry West, Wade Sumpter, Sr. Special Pallbearers: Elders of Main and Oklahoma Church of Christ; (Butch LeCrone, Red Coleman, Clem Santine, Tim Maxcey, Danny Bridgwater) Honorary Pallbearers: Kermit Peters, Rick McCracken, Bill Griffin, Brent Bundy, Jeremy Snow, Garrett Short, Jim Lower, Drew Santine, Jerry Banker, Lynn Edwards, and members of the McAlester Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; his son, Scott Howard; his father and mother, Howard and Ruby McLeod; brother, MG Bill McLeod and Joseph McLeod; sister June Henry; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Stella Knox.
