Jesse's Story

Jesse Oscar "Buzz" Lafevers, of Shawnee, died at St. Anthony Medical Center on March 9, 2018, at the age of 77.
He was born on December 18, 1940, to Oleta Martin and J. H. Lafevers, in McAlester. He graduated with the McAlester High School Class of 1959, before enrolling in Eastern State College in Wilburton.
He served in the United States Army Reserves and worked in the Special Weapons division at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant.
In 1963, he married Earline Turney. Of the marriage, came three children, Brandi, Diana and John Edward.
In 1995, he married Carol Ann Higgins. Three children came with this marriage, Gayla McKenzie Arnold, Karen McKenzie Cook and Johnna McKenzie Ervin, and their families.
To his grandchildren and their friends he was "Pop Buzz." He was a fixture at their ballgames, school and dance events and virtually anything else they participated in. Each of them feels his loss profoundly.
Buzz loved to shop, anytime, anywhere, alone or with family. He especially loved the University of Oklahoma Sooners.
He was a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the benevolent and protective Order of Elks, Lodge 533, McAlester.
Fun-loving, thoughtful and kind, Buzz was a sharp-dressed man with a ready smile for all he met. Above all he loved spending time with family and friends, especially at the lake.
Buzz is survived by his wife, Carol, of the home. Children, John Edward Lafevers, Tommy and Gayla Arnold, Kelly and Karen Cook, Diana Hatfield, Mike and Johnna Ervin, and Brandi Hutchings, and the late Darren Hutchings. Grandchildren, Havanna Hutchings, Logan and Martina Lafevers, Landon Lafevers, Lyndsey Lafevers, Lexus Lafevers, Amy Arnold, Seth Arnold, Katie Arnold, KelliAnn and Jeb Rollins, Kassidy Cook, JaDian Hatfield, Autumn Hatfield, Mica and Travis Hayes, Jon Michael and Rachel Ervin, Trey Ervin, and Grayson Ervin, as well as two sisters, Carole Hysinger and husband, Merle, and Phyllis Price and husband, Kenneth.
Buzz was great-grandfather to Emma Elizabeth Arnold, Reid Jackson Rollins, Lilliann McKenzie Rollins, Rushton Jeb Rollins, Cason Landon Hayes, Pierce Michael Hayes, Vaughn Michael Ervin, Trace Wilson, Tristyn Jay Wilson, Trynity Blake Wilson, Darren LaFevers, Ethen LaFevers, Melody LaFevers, Bradley Fleming, and Lily Hatfield.
He is also survived by his cousin, John Clifford Lafevers, whom he considered his best friend and brother and John's wife, Ruth.
Honorary pallbearers are Tom Rogers, John Watson, Sheldon Cook, Eddie Harper, Billy Brown, Jeff Duff, Steve Davis and Rocky Ellis.
Visitation will be at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in McAlester today, March 13, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday at the funeral home at 2 p.m.
