James Hubert Choate, 91, of McAlester, passed away at a local convalescent home on Saturday, July 22, 2017.
He was born in Luther on Feb. 27, 1926. He was the youngest of 12 children born to Thomas Keith Choate and Georgia Mae (Crow) Choate.
He was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Tishomingo in 1939.
He was an ordained deacon in the First Baptist Church of El Reno in 1958, where he served all areas in the Sunday school.
On Aug. 27, 1978, he married Jacqueline Steward in El Reno.
She had two daughters, Denise Nick and husband, John Nick, of McAlester, and Jamie Lynn Condray and husband, Jason Condray, of Weatherford, Texas. He loved the girls and their families as his very own.
He is also survived by two step-grandchildren, Angela Brewer and husband, Brett Brewer, of McAlester, and Dr. Michael S. Nick and wife, Dr. Drake Sellmeyer Nick, of Bartlesville; six step-great-grandchildren, Bailey and Peyton Little, Payton Brewer, Major, Lucia and Sloan Nick, and many loving nephews and nieces.
He retired Jan. 3, 1985, after working 31½ years for Soil Conservation Service, a branch of the United States Department of Agriculture.
He then worked 10 years in real estate appraising while waiting for Jacque to retire so they could travel and be with family more.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Virgil, Vincent, Verna, Vecil, Otis, Leon and Pete, and four sisters, Lela and Lillie (twins), Bernice and Exie.
The family will greet friends today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bishop Chapel of Memories.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Rodney Briggs officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Nick, Jason Condray, Dr. Michael Nick, Brett Brewer, Frank War and Neal Talley.
