Helen R. Russell, 87, of McAlester, died Saturday, June 9, 2018, at McAlester Regional Health Center.
Helen was born on December 27, 1930, in Hatfield, Arkansas, to Dr. C.J. Johnson and Mrs. Lillie Bell (Ladd) Johnson. Helen graduated from McAlester High School with the Class of 1949.
She married Ernest Olen Russell on January 13, 1952, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in McAlester.
Besides being a loving wife and mother, Helen also worked outside the home. She owned and operated The Drapery Center.
Following Olen's retirement, they enjoyed traveling together. Recently, her best days were when the entire family came home to laugh and cook together.
She is survived by her three children, Mark Russell, of Tulsa, Dawn Cox and husband, Walter, of Tulsa, and Gay Smith, of McAlester; four grandchildren, Daniel Smith and wife, Erin, Kevin Cox, April Kelly and husband, Scott, and Aaron Smith and wife, Thea; four great-grandchildren, Colton Hall, Jaxon Kelly, Fallon Smith and Emory Smith, and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Olen Russell, in 2016; parents, Dr. C.J. and Lillie Bell Johnson; twin brother, Howard Johnson; brothers, Harold, John and Monroe Ledford, and sister, Alice Mae Ledford.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today, June 12, at First Baptist Church of McAlester. Helen's grandson, the Rev. Aaron Smith, will officiate her service. Arrangements entrusted to Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home of McAlester.
