Helen M. Nelson, of McAlester, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at a local nursing home at the age of 84.
Helen was born on July 1, 1932, in Coalgate, to Jack and Mary (Cole) Zachary. She married Eden Clayton Nelson on Dec. 10, 1952, in Charleston, Arkansas, and enjoyed 52 years of marriage until his death in 2004. They made Oklahoma their home, however, traveled extensively and lived abroad during Mr. Nelson's military career.
Helen was a longtime member of Grand Avenue Methodist Church.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Kellie M. Nelson, Stephanie Anne Nelson, Natalie Nelson, Tiffany Nelson Lee, DeAnna Marie Nelson, and Stephen "Jack" Nelson, all of McAlester; brother, Homer Zachary, of Krebs; sister, Virginia Jackson, of Oklahoma City, and numerous great-grandchildren and other family and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Eden Nelson; parents, Jack and Mary Zachary; son, Stephen Nelson, in 1990; daughter, Andrea Denise Nelson, in 1972, and grandson, Clayton Nelson, in 2015.
The family will greet friends today, March 9, at Bishop Chapel of Memories from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 10, at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Dr. Matt Judkins officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester.
Pallbearers will be Lynn Tucker, David Kamrud, Jack Southard, Julian Kamrud, Nazzire Hearst and Jaylan Nelson.
