Helen's Story

Helen LaRuth Jackson, affectionately known as "Ruth" or "Ruthie" passed away on Friday February 9, 2018, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
The memorial service will be held at Holy Temple COGIC at 1100 East Chickasaw Avenue in McAlester on Saturday, February 24, at 1 p.m.
Helen was born on January 10, 1950, in Shawnee, to Mark D. and Jessie (James) Downing. She attended L'Ouverture Schools from elementary to high school, graduating in the Class of 1968.
She then attended Eastern Oklahoma State College and the University of Central Oklahoma and possessed an associates degree.
She married Robert Jackson. To this union, no children were born.
She lived and worked at various places in McAlester, such as Eastside Supperette under the ownership of Mr. Miller "Bo" Newman, housekeeping at the old Holiday Inn, Colonial Lodge nursing home and was an in-home health and care provider for Med Corp and Girling Home Health.
She was a member of New Horizon Church of God in Christ, which was later Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, under the pastorship of the late Elder James V. Moore, then later the Elder Willie Drumgo.
She enjoyed helping and spending time with her family, especially with her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, Antron Hendrix, Mark Downing IV, A'Zuri, Antron Jr. "AJ", Emma and Xavier.
A special cousin, Josie Oulds, and special friends, Elaine Helen, Margie Atkinson, Ms. Helen Johnson, Willie Jean Frederick and Sarah Taylor, and a host of other family members and friends.
She was preceded in by her parents, Mark and Jessie Downing; grandmother, Ada Meade; brother, Herman E. Downing; two sisters, Brenda McCauley and Shirley Downing; a special cousin: Levi Jackson, and a special brother-in-law, Robert Hendrix.
