Hartshorne native Greta Stephenson, 83, passed suddenly at home on Friday, October 27, 2017.
She is survived by her husband, J.W. (James William), and her children, Mary Ann (Stephenson) Strombitski and husband, Carl, of Brighton, Colorado, and David Stephenson and wife, Rita, of Oklahoma City. She is survived by a granddaughter, Carla Ellen Strombitski, of Brighton, Colorado. Her surviving siblings include, Leota Jeffers, of Nacogdoches, Texas, Gloria Marzuola, and Linda Sherrill and husband, Kenny, all of McAlester. She is also survived by a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Greta was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson Edward Curliss and Lona Ellen (Key) Curliss, of Hartshorne, and siblings, Leonard, and Jim and Benny Curliss, along with Mary (Curliss) Moody.
She was a graduate of Hartshorne High School (Class of 1951) and the St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing in Oklahoma City, earning her registered nurse designation in 1954.
She married J.W. Stephenson on March 12, 1955, in Norman, at the First Christian Church. They were married 62 years, with a half century of this time in Hartshorne.
Greta was active in the community and a noted local historian, helping to solve many genealogy mysteries for those with Pittsburg County or Oklahoma roots as well as others from across the United States and Europe.
She lived her life boldly through her deep love of family, abiding faith in God, genealogy studies and prized Cherokee heritage. She was a descendant of Francis Scott Key, author of the Star Spangled Banner.
The family will receive friends at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Funeral services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in McAlester.
Honorary pallbearers are Loy Factor, Leon Mace, Jim Kurilko, Terry Rich and the elders of the First Christian Church.
