Gilbert's Story

Gilbert Lee Lawrence, 87, of Stuart, died Friday, December 8, 2017, in Shawnee. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 12, 2107, at Bishop Chapel of Memories officiated by Rev. Cecil Day, Duston Hull and Jason Lindley. Burial will follow at White Chimney Cemetery with military honors provided by the Choctaw Nation Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be the grandsons and the great-grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rufus Hull, Derrald McNutt, Clovis Fannin, Roger Dean Fannin and Benny Mauldin.
Gilbert was born January 13, 1930, in Mangum, Oklahoma to Green David Lawrence and Mary Gertrude (Hickerson) Lawrence. He attended the Stuart Public Schools and graduated from the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1948. He attended Bacone College for a short time before enlisting in the Marine Corp. He was decorated with two Purple Hearts as a Korean Conflict Survivor of Chosin Reservoir. Upon returning from the service, he attended Okmulgee A & M Tech School and was certified in drafting. He married Wilma Jean Lett on Marach 13, 1951 in Van Buren, Arkansas. He was employed by Roberson Steel in Oklahoma City, The Corp of Engineers, Collins and Flood Engineering, and Poe and Associates Engineers. He owned a construction company for several years which merged with Stallings Construction of Ada, OK. They later sold the company to Flint Engineering in Tulsa, from which he retired.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Wilma, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Dean Lee, Rhonda and Doug Hull, Wanda and Dirk Been, all of McAlester, and Pamela Lawrence of Broken Bow; grandchildren, Jason and Kristi Lindley of Hartshorne, Duston Hull of McAlester, Evan and Michelle Lee of Denton, TX, Leslie and Helen Hayes of Elmore City, OK., Cameron Ridenour of Shawnee and Tara Biggerstaff of Topeka, KS.; great-grandchildren, Dillon, Justin and Ashley Lawrence, Tyler, Blake, Holli and Brett Lindley, Joarden, Corbyn and Timber Hayes and Alice Lee; sisters-in-law, Patsy Lawrence and Willa Lett, of McAlester; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents, Green and Mary Lawrence; siblings, Catherine Milano and George and Cassel Lawrence; sister-in-laws, Billie Lawrence, Grace Hull and Sarah Lawrence; brother-in-laws, Shirrell & Tom Lett, Bill Milano,and Wayne Hull; Mother and father-in-law, Lena and D.E. (Duck) Lett.
