George Joseph Yott, 83, of McAlester died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at his residence. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m., Tuesday May 30, 2017, at Bishop Chapel of Memories led by Deacon Danny Brennan. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Wednesday May 31, 2017, at St. Joseph Church celebrated by the Rev. Kingsley George-Obilonu. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, McAlester with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy Honors Team. Pallbearers will be: Allen Mann, Al Ross, Ron Monsour, Josh Jeffries, Trevor Sadler and Larry Baker. Honorary pallbearers are: Bill Derichsweiler, Joe Massaro, Phillip Stizza, Bob Woolman, Bob Basolo and Paul Zoller. George was born to George Francis and Evelyn (Warner) Yott July 30, 1933 in Fargo, North Dakota. George served in the U.S. Navy and earned the rank of LDO Lieutenant. While he was stationed at the McAlester U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot Navy Base he fell in love with Nioma Ludean "Lu" Sealey they married and that love endured for 60 years of marriage. George and Lu's adventures in the Navy cris-crossed them across the nation and they weathered being separated for seven Mediterranean cruises during a total of 22 and a half years of Navy life. After retiring from the Navy, George obtained an animal science degree from Oklahoma State University and went to work for American Breeding Service for 10 years. He returned to the East Central University to obtain a degree in his true passion, teaching. He taught science at Haileyville High School for 12 years, confirmation classes and religious education at St. John's in McAlester. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Church in Krebs, and various scripture studies and prayer groups. George was one of the founding members of the Oklahoma Cursillo movement, sharing his love for Jesus with men from all over the state. In his spare time, George enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and was a life-long lover of learning.
George is survived by son, Ken Yott and wife, Cheryl, of McAlester, Oklahoma; daughters, Tracy Matthews and husband, Ken, of McAlester; Julie Brennan and husband, Danny, of Tulsa; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Ann Yott of Fairlawn, Ohio; brother-in-law, Milton Hogan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Mildred Thompson of Haywood, Oklahoma and numerous other family members and friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Evelyn Yott; and his wife of over 60 years, Nioma Ludean "Lu" Yott.
