Gary Dean Sockey, of McAlester, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018, at the age of 52.
Gary was born June 5, 1965, in Bakersfield, California. He graduated from Hartshorne High School.
He joined the United States Army 82nd Airborne and received an honorable discharge.
Gary worked as a guard at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and as a security guard for the Choctaw Nation.
Gary married Lisa Snow on May 29, 2011. Gary's hobbies included riding his Harley, fishing, hunting and, as a talented artist, drawing. His greatest joy was spending time with family. Gary was also a proud member of the Choctaw Nation.
He leaves to mourn, his wife, Lisa Sockey, of the home; children, Ada Woody and husband, Tyler, and Ashton Sockey, Marshall Doig and wife, Brittany, Kolton Lewsaw, Aimi Lewsaw, and Demetric Lewsaw, all of McAlester, John Lewsaw and wife, Courtney, of Acworth, Georgia, Kacey Doig, of Missouri, and McKenzie Sockey, of Ada; grandbabies, Piper Woody, Prestyn Woody, Ava Lewsaw, Haven Holder and Joanna Lewsaw; mother, Mary Freeman, of Stuart; father, Billy Sockey and wife, Mary, of Haileyville; mother-in-law, Diana Franklin, of McAlester; siblings, Rodney Luker and wife, Kathy, of McAlester, Billy Sockey, of Stuart, John Freeman, of Bache, Charles Sockey, of West Virginia, Arliene Nash and husband, Darren, of Stuart, Denise Russell and husband, Wayne, of Stuart, Tina Sockey, of Haileyville, and Jeanette Dority and husband, Joe, of Haileyville, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his first wife, Rhonda (Isham) Sockey; step-father, Arlie Freeman; grandparents, Ada and John Freeman, and Dovie and Edward Volland; nephew, Keon Russell; great-grandmother, Bernice Brown, and father-in-law and "best friend", Terry Franklin.
The family will greet friends today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bishop Chapel of Memories.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 1, at Bishop Chapel of Memories. The committal service will be held at Fort Gibson National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 1.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Wilson, Jonathan Sockey, Patrick Luker, Jesse Terry, Bruce Hufferd and Charles "Charheehee" Pounds.
Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Fry.
