Eugene Earl Tharp, 88, of McAlester, died Thursday, June 29, 2017, at his residence.
Viewing will be Sunday, July 2, from noon until 5 p.m. at Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, July 3, at Chaney's Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Veteran's Colony Cemetery near Wilburton.
Eugene was born on March 7, 1929, in Oklahoma City, to Earl and Gladys Viola (Cutler) Tharp.
He entered the United States Army on Aug. 22, 1950, serving in the 45th Division during Korea. He earned his honorable discharge on June 16, 1952, and married Martha Lozier.
Eugene was a farmer before he started his career at Eastern Oklahoma State College as a custodian, activities bus driver and was the intermural sports director before his retirement in 1996.
His love for athletics was great and in his opinion, the greatest was Oklahoma University.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Tharp; daughter, Diana Denton; son, Don Tharp; his children by choice, Joe Younger and Karla Baker, and four grandchildren, Kevin Younger, Derrek Younger, Jeana Hartless and Wes Tharp. Seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Edna Long, Barbara Ewell, and Ruth Rinehart, and a brother, Jack Tharp.
Eugene was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Tharp; his parents, Earl and Gladys Tharp, and a sister, Mildred Tharp.
