Edwin Charles "Chuck" Tippit, 77, of McAlester, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at his residence.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Bishop Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 12, at First United Methodist Church. The White Rose ceremony will be conducted by fellow members of International Fraternity of Sigma Chi. Burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Chuck was born on the 4th of July 1942, in Oklahoma City, the son of William Chester and Aline Frances (Stahl) Tippit.
In 1953, the Tippit family moved to McAlester and Chuck's father, W.C. Tippit, began working in the insurance agency with W.E. Dickey. Later, W.C. Tippit acquired full ownership in 1955 with the passing of W.E. Dickey.
Chuck attended school in McAlester, where he enjoyed playing on the high school tennis team and was voted most original of his graduating class. He also was elected master councilor of the order of DeMolays. Chuck later became a 32nd degree Mason.
Chuck enlisted in the United States Army after high school, serving two years active duty and six years reserve duty. He later earned his honorable discharge, serving as a medic.
Once he returned to Oklahoma, he began his college career at the Oklahoma State University. He earned his bachelor's degree in finance in 1965.
While at OSU, he served as vice president of the business fraternity, Alpha Kapa Psi, and was treasurer of the insurance fraternity, Iota Sigma. He was also a member of the Gamma Delta chapter of Sigma Chi International Fraternity, where he served as the chapter's treasurer.
He married Carol Ann Nickles, of Ponca City, in 1966 and they welcomed three children, Carrie Lynn, William Charles and Brian Charles.
In 1966, his lifelong career began with Traveler's Insurance Company in Oklahoma City where he was an assistant field supervisor in the commercial and personal underwriting. Later that year, he was promoted to field supervisor in the Causality and Property Division. In 1970 he transferred to the Traveler's Tulsa office where he became an account analyst in the personal lines division.
After the death of his father, Chuck returned to McAlester to purchase his father's agency. Chuck purchased Tippit Insurance Agency in July 1971.
Chuck served as class moderator for basic course of workmen's compensation and general liability at the 27th Annual Insurance School in Norman. He also received a top honor being designated a Certified Insurance Counselor for the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors in 1983.
After a lifelong career in the insurance business, he retired from Tippit Insurance Agency in July of 2011. The agency was acquired by his two sons, Brian and Bill Tippit.
He was very active in the community of McAlester. He served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army for many years and on the board of directors at the McAlester Boys Club of America. Chuck was also a member of the McAlester Elks Lodge, BPOE No. 533 for 45 years, was a member of the Harrison-Powers post No. 79 American Legion, and First United Methodist Church.
Chuck is survived by his daughter, Carrie Lynn Petty and husband, Butch, of McAlester; sons, Brian Charles Tippit, and William Charles Tippit and wife, Shanna, all of McAlester, and grandchildren, Amanda Harrell and husband, Jason, of McAlester, Justin Ardese and wife, Emily, of Healdton, Cody Petty, Tyler James Tippit, and Lauren Isom, all of McAlester, and Jacob Hopper, of Norman. Six great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Grant, Maddie, Ella and Samuel Harrell, all of McAlester, and Caroline Rayne Ardese, of Healdton. Chuck is also survived by many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, William Chester "Bill" Tippit Jr.
Serving as pallbearers will be his family, Butch Petty, Cody Petty, Justin Ardese, Jason Harrell, Brian Tippit and W.C. "Bill" Tippit.

The Tyrl Family loved Chuck so much! He always made us laugh. Chuck was the life of the party! He will be greatly missed!
