Edna Lou Folmer, 86, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, in McAlester.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Bishop Chapel of Memories located at 110 S. 3rd Street in McAlester, with the Reverend Brian Smith, Northside Assembly of God Church, and cousin, the Reverend Howard Burton, Chaplain at Assemblies of God U.S. Missions, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Burton, Marc Howell, Charles Folmer and Dirrick Folmer.
Born Sept. 13, 1931, in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Loucillious Price and Edna Viola Burton. The family moved to Weleetka where she spent her childhood and school years.
During her school years she enjoyed music, playing the piano, as well as the slide trombone in the school band, painting, tumbling and working in her father's garage/service station in Weleetka.
After her high school years, she married Lester, also from Weleetka, when he returned from serving in the United States Army during World War II. They were married in Okemah on Aug. 14, 1948.
She will be laid to rest next to her husband of 66 years who preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 2014.
She was active in church activities throughout her lifetime, worshiping in the many locations where Lester's railroad career took him and their family. She served in leadership positions in many of the churches. These included church pianist, church secretary/treasurer, church fund raising activities coordinator and vacation bible school coordinator.
Additionally, she spent many of her adult years as a beautician/beauty shop owner, serving people in the different communities where they lived, including El Reno and McAlester.
She was a multi-talented person with many hobbies such as baking, quilting, flower gardening, floral arranging, decorating and was a skilled seamstress.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra Folmer, of McAlester; son, Dwayne Folmer and wife, Erika, of Corvallis, Montana; daughter, Karen Mitchell and husband, Robert, of Beggs, and son, David Folmer, of McAlester. She and Lester have seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Ellen Humphrey, of Tulsa, and Linda Blevins, and brother Frank Burton, of Yuma, Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Howard Burton Sr., and Louis Paul, both of Tulsa.
The Folmer children would like to offer a special acknowledgment to Mitchell Manor Convalescent Center staff who compassionately cared for both Lester and Edna during their final years.
