Dr. Delta's Story
Dr. Delta Walker [D.W.] Bridges Jr., of McAlester, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. He was 79 years old, and died of congestive heart failure.
A devout Christian, his faith has been realized.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Bridges; his sons, Scott, Paul and Brian Bridges; his grandchildren, Emily, Hollie, Katie, Jack and Sarah; sister-in-law, Francis Sanger; nephew, Carter Sanger, and nieces, Amy Horn and Della Kramedjian.
Sadly he was predeceased by his daughter, Tracy.
D.W. was born on May 7, 1937. His parents, Delta and Thelma, were both employed at an oil refinery in Tulsa.
He married Joyce Arlene McCarter on August 29, 1959. Dr. Bridges was the first of his family to graduate from high school, college and medical school.
Given that he was born prematurely and not expected to survive, it is no surprise that he chose pediatrics as his specialty.
He served his country during the Vietnam War at Fort Carson, Colorado, by caring for our troops and their families.
He then established his medical practice in McAlester at the McAlester Clinic.
A man of immense compassion, he saw young patients regardless of their ethnicity or ability to pay. His family fondly remembers one 'payment', where the parents, unable to afford his services, gave him a gallon of wild plum juice, which Joyce turned into the best jelly the family has ever enjoyed. His calling and compassion led him to be a crucial element in the development of the nursery for the McAlester Regional Health Center.
In addition, he was a school board member and president, a scout leader, a member of his church's board, a multi-year organizer of Angel Tree's outreach to the families of prison inmates, an adjunct faculty member of University of Oklahoma Medical school, a medical missionary on numerous trips, a much beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a faithful friend to countless folks.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Service.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1501 South 13th Street, officiated by Dr. Matt Judkins. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester.
Pallbearers will be Buster Cockrum, Don Lewis, Ken Miller, Tim Isenberg, Rex Emery and Bill Ervin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dunning Sanger Sr., Jeff Horn, Chris Kramdedjian, Carter Sanger, Jack Bridges and Dunning Sanger Jr.
In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you honor D.W. by giving to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
D.W. was a true great-heart. He loved life immensely, he adored his wife and family, he loved people well, he gave of himself gladly and is very much in love with his Savior.
