Donald's Story

Donald Raymond Hackler was born in Stigler, on Aug. 3, 1929, and departed this life on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, in McAlester, at the age of 88.
A member of the Class of 1947 at Wewoka High School, he received a bachelor of science degree in business from East Central Oklahoma University in 1955 and an LL.B. from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1960. Don began his legal career in McAlester. He served as the Associate District Judge for Pittsburg County from 1969 to 1970, then returned to the practice of law. He served as city attorney for the city of McAlester from 1972 to 1985. He remained a practicing attorney until his death, with his final 24 years in practice with his daughter, Deborah, in the firm of Hackler and Hackler.
He was a member of the Oklahoma and Pittsburg County Bar Associations for 57 years, a 50-year member of the McAlester Lions Club, a 50-year member of the McAlester Valley Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 33rd degree, and a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of McAlester.
Donald married Doris Jean Brown on June 7, 1953, in McAlester and they celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary four months prior to his death.
A voracious reader, he worked the daily newspaper crossword puzzle in ink. He relished spending time with his family, sharing a good meal with friends and relaxing outdoors at the lake or on the patio.
Traveling with his wife was his true passion. They shared many unique experiences together in Alaska, Canada, Maine, Italy, France and Egypt, as well as multiple trips to the Texas Gulf Coast, New Mexico, and Branson, Missouri.
In addition to his wife, he leaves daughters, Donna Jean Hackler, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Deborah Leigh Hackler, of McAlester, Oklahoma, and a son, Donald Raymond Hackler Jr. ("Skipper") and his wife, Dr. Gwen Ladd Hackler, of Oklahoma City. He also leaves three brothers, Harold Eugene Hackler, Richard Paul Hackler, and Joseph Patrick Hackler, and one sister, Judy Pinley, together with their respective spouses, along with brother-in-law, Newt Mitchell Sr., and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Hackler and Lena Hackler Barnett; his father-in-law, Preslie H. Brown; his mother-in-law, Lynis Brown; sisters-in-law, Martha Brown Mitchell and Beverly Hackler, and brother-in-law, Preslie Howard Brown Jr.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of McAlester, 3rd and Washington Avenue, followed by a reception in Westminster Hall. The Rev. D. Scott Vandenheuvel will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers include Eudell Ealey, Bob Ettner, Jerry Grubbs, Bruce Hall, Carl Parkhurst, Paul Volturo, Lance Woodliff, the members of the Pittsburg County Bar Association, and the members of the McAlester Lions Club.
