Darrell Ralph Cozad, 76, of McAlester, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2016, at 9:12 p.m.
He was born on Aug. 31, 1940, in Alderson, to Athiel Raymond Cozad and Iva Neoma (Trapp) Cozad. He graduated from Haileyville High School in 1959.
He served his country by being in the United States Army National Guard, U.S. Army serving in Vietnam and Germany (as a Ranger of the Special Forces) and in the U.S. Air Force in Korea.
He worked at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester for many years.
He was a jack-of-all-trades, gunsmith, auto mechanic, auto painter, prison guard, special deputy sheriff, riot squad (E Team) at OSP, locksmith, hunter, cook and soldier.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post numbers 3085 and 1098 since 1983. He was a charter member of Cox Chandler Fraternal Order of Police No. 176, life member of Disabled American Vets and DAVA Chapter No. 20 Pittsburg, and Hartshorne American Legion No. 180.
He attended many colleges and was an avid learner. He learned his skills from books.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at Brumley-Mills Chapel.
Lunch will be provided at the Hartshorne VFW Post 3085, located at 304 Apache in Hartshorne from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The food will be provided by District 3 VFW and Auxiliaries.
Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m Friday, Dec. 30. The family will be there from 4 to 7 p.m.
Survivors include his five daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy (Cozad) Denny and Bob Denny, of Griffith, Indiana, LaQuetta (Cozad) McCartor and Gerry McCartor, of Oklahoma City, Tammy (Cozad) Cato and Leon Cato, of Oklahoma City, Iva Lela (Cozad) Turman, of McAlester, and Esther Marie (Cozad) Hansen and James Hansen II, of McAlester, and his brother and sister-in-law, B.L. Cozad and Tiney Cozad; aunts and spouses, Lorna (Trapp) and Jerry Poole, Elois Woods, Norma Ann (Trapp) Woods, Donna (Trapp) and Mike Hardin.
Also, grandchildren, Robert Denny II, of Griffith, Indiana, Nime Nancy Aguru, of Oklahoma City, Iris Lane (Montross) Minor, of Edmond, Gabrielle Cato, of McAlester, Amanda Pettigrew, of Oklahoma City, Jeremiah Cato, of Oklahoma City, Logan Denny, of Griffith, Indiana, and Alexzandria McCartor, of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren, Aaryn-Athiel Turman, of Oklahoma City, Trinity Denny, of Griffith, Indiana, Xavier Harper, of Oklahoma City, Icia-Emily McCartor, of Oklahoma City, and Auzzadeh Cato, of Oklahoma City. Step-grandchildren, James and Meloni Hansen III, of Oklahoma, Stephanie and Billy Jenkins, of Bartlesville, Jeremy Hansen, of Oklahoma, and Candi Wolf and Brandi Wolf, of Oklahoma City. Step-great-grandchildren, Briley Hansen, Jade Hansen, Deven Hansen, Jessie Hansen, Ethan Hansen, Johnnie Hansen, Wyatt Jenkins, Jasmine Jenkins, Nick Jenkins, Tarah (Wolf) Fair, Tyjhiana Wolf, Ta-Nieya Wolf, Tyrin Wolf, Hunter Johnson, DeVantae Olah, TaSarah Wolf and Marcus Wolf, all of Oklahoma.

Cozad Jr., Christine and Carlos Alonso, Raymond Earl and Bobbi Cozad, Tommy Darrell and Kathy Cozad, and Patricia and Tommy Pogue, of Oklahoma; in-law nieces and nephews and spouses, Ida Bell (Trollinger) Gardiner and Norrie Gardiner, Beckie (Trollinger) Marchal, Orval Lee Janes, Wilburn Janes, Louise (Janes) Tash, Johnny Ray Janes, Norma (Effinger) Gafford, George Jr. Effinger, Janet Effinger, Terry Effinger, James Effinger, Henretta Effinger, Cynthia (Cole) Henrichs and Steve Henrichs, Carla (Carpenter) Nelson, Jamie (Carpenter) Smith, and Aaron Smith, Shelly Kay Effinger, Debbie Effinger, Craig Effinger, and Jeremy Nelson, and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Athiel Raymond Cozad and Iva Neoma (Trapp) Cozad, and wives, Easter Effinger Cozad Drumheller and Verna Cozad.
O.C. Hawkins of the VFW Post No. 1098 McAlester will officiate and Leon Cato will assist. Military honors will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098.
Pallbearers include Logan Denny, Robert Denny II, Jeremiah Cato, Raymond Earl Cozad, Tommy Darrell Cozad and B.L. Cozad Jr.
Honorary pallbearers include Timothy Turman Sr., B.L. Cozad, Robert Denny I, Gerry McCartor, James Hansen II, Leon Cato and James Garigin.
The family requests that memorials be made to the VFW Auxiliary 3085 and designated for veterans and family support, P.O. Box 3403, McAlester, OK, 74502.
