Amy Michelle (Kern) Mitchell, 47, of Keller, Texas, formerly of McAlester, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at her home.
Visitation will begin on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. followed by a rosary at 10:30 at Brumley-Mills Chapel in McAlester.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Brumley-Mills Chapel. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta.
Amy Kern-Mitchell was born on April 22, 1972, in Stillwater, to Mike and Linda (Auldridge) Kern. The family settled in McAlester in 1984 when Amy was 12 years old and she completed her education here, graduating with the McAlester High School Class of 1990. She then attended Northeastern University where she earned two master's degrees.
She worked as a speech pathologist, first here in McAlester at the hospital and for some local schools, then moved to Texas where she continued her speech therapy work with a private firm.
Amy was known by her family and friends as a true "animal person". When she was younger, she and her mother, Linda, were involved with the local PAWS group and she always had a pet dog or two.
Amy is survived by her father, Mike Kern; a sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Bryan Barnette and their children, Ethan and Lucas; aunts and uncles, Mark, Vickie, Margie, Teresa, Duke, John, Sharon, Renee, Greg and Kathy; special cousins, Kenny and Ginger Speer and their children, Mathew and Sarah, and many other cousins and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Linda Kern.
The family asks in lieu of flowers, friends make a memorial donation in Amy's name to your local animal shelter.

To the family and loved ones of Amy Mitchell. It was a great joy and honor to be able to work with her at Sava Senior Care. I enjoyed immensely her sense of humor her absolute love of her nephews and her dogs as well as her family. I enjoyed watching the videos that she would show us of Ethan and Lucas. She will be greatly missed in our department is being part of our wonderful therapy family our deepest condolences to the family and you will be in our prayers.
